💠 To The Lighthouse :-

"Beauty was not everything. Beauty had this penalty — it came too readily, came too completely. It stilled life — froze it."

  • Film :- TO THE LIGHTHOUSE
  • Directed by :- Colin Gragg
  • Realising date : 1983

                              To The Lighthouse is a novel of stream of consciousness written by Virginia woolf. Gragg's Film made in 1983 , attempted to create an adaptation of novel. Did he do it successfully ? In my view that depends whether  the deviation from the novel allows the adoptions to become successfully.

  So, let's discuss various frames of the film To The Lighthouse ........

                                      The first opening scene we find that the camera focus on two frames, this is the frame of toy doll . And also in the frame we find that darkness is the centre and certain images like candle, toy doll shells etc. In the second frame the doll lying on the floor may be it shows the crushed dreams and right of the women in the modern age and also the patriarchy society.

                                     The first opening scene does not identically replicate the beginning of the novel, but of course changes have to be made somewhere. We as viewers need to see. In this frame Little James who see The Lighthouse through the window. It is also indicate the he eagerly wants to visit The Lighthouse. His wish to visit The Lighthouse we see throughout the novel.

                                    This is the frame of "Summer House" of the Mr. Ramsay.  The setting of the novel is modern period. This 'Summer house' symbolises both wealth and richness. This summer house played a vital role throughout the film and novel also. This is mejor symbol of the novel.

                                 At the breakfast table , now with mr. Ramsay in the background amd Lily in the foreground. Both are in focus.lily says, " James thwarted again ". Indication it has happened before, prue, in shot response ' I'm afraid so, mr. Ramsay join the conversation;

"That boy will have learn that we can not plan our lives around what he wants to do."

                        These words are so significance to show control and authority over his family in a similar way to his a action of blocking the view of the Lighthouse does in the novel. Mrs Ramsay return to the table with James and puts him on her knee. Gents has a scrolling expressions whilst glaring accross the table at his father. The camera used for focalization, before cutting and the shot lasts for a few seconds to create an effect.  It is a shows that hatred he feels for his father with gloomy  non dietetic music planing for strengthening mood.

                          In this frame we find the relationship between mother and son. Here we find that James closely connected with her mother.

                              In the movie or novel we find that Lily Briscoe is a painter. Throughout the novel she find herself through the painting. She make great paintings like landscape , summer house , Mrs. Ramsay's painting etc. Lily is a good friend of Mrs. Ramsay. At the end of the movie returning to the summer house she finally finishes her painting.  Lilly's paintings played a vital role in movie or novel also.
