Thinking Activity : Hamlet movie screening

Hello readers ,

Welcome to my blog . This is my thinking activity task given by Dr. Dilip Barad sir .  Click here to view about the task .

Hamlet  is a  1996 film adaptation of  William Shakespeare's play  Hamlet . And this movie adapted and directed by Kenneth  Branagh . Who also star as prince Hamlet . Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet is only full version of movie no editing and cutting of dilogues . And also Kenneth Branagh used many original dilogues of the book .

∆  How faithful is the movie  to the original play ?

Yes , In my point of view Kenneth Branagh's film Hamlet is the faithful version of the original play . In this movie we find some of changes . The play originally located in the  11 the century Denmark , and in this movie Kenneth Branagh choose  Victorian era . And in this movie we find that Kenneth Branagh'' Hamlet fully presented with the each dilogues as it is original text . And also Branagh sets internal scenes in a vibrantly colorful setting , featuring a throne room dominated by mirrored doors . The film is the first version of Hamlet , running just over  four hours . And the length of the movie shows the faithfulness of the original play .

∆ After watching the movie your perception about play , Characters or situations changed ?

According to my interpretation  , while keeping all of Shakespeare's original text  , Kenneth Branagh change the settings of the play from the Renaissance era to the 19 the century . Instead of the stereotypical Shakespearean visual of light and big collars the characters dress  much more modern looking Victorian clothies .  Hamlet for example wear  very simple black coat and trousers for a large part of movie .

And also in the film we find that  the Hamlet is potrayed as too old than the real prince Hamlet in the play who is very young . And Ophelia is also a powerful character .

∆  Do you feel  ' aesthetic ' delight while watching the movie ? If  yes ,  exactly when did it happen ? If  no , can you explain with reason ?

Yes , I feel aesthetic delight  while watching the movie . In the movie  the beginning of the movie The Elsinore Castel ,  and also the character of Hamlet is more attractive, his madness , mental struggling , his split personality , his misogyny , and   also ghost . This all give me aesthetic delight .

∆ Do you feel  ' catharsis ' while or after watching movie  ? If yes , exactly when did happen ? If no , can you explain with the reason ?

Yes , I feel catharsis in the play  . In the movie when the Hamlet was cone back  Wittenberg to Denmark  , at that time he hears the sudden death of his Father king Hamlet and his mother who marriage with his uncle  .  And also while Ophelia became made after death of his father , in this movie we find that no one who can understand her feelings and situations  . And then at the end she became  committed  suicide . At that time I feel pity for her . And at the end we find Ophelia and Hamlet Both got tregic and terrible end .

∆ Does screening of movie help you in better understanding for the play ?

Yes , absolutely the movie screening help me a lot to better understanding for the play .  Through the movie we understand  situations and emotion of Characters  in the batter way through their emotion and dilogues .  And through the movie I understand all the characters better way .

∆ was there any particular scene or moment in the movie that you will cherish life time ?

Yes there are some of certain scenes of the movie cherish me lifetime .  There are  many scenes which are still floating in front of my eyes like ,  ghost of king Hamlet , Hamlet's split personality ,  Ophelia's poetry in madness , grave digging scene , and also Hamlet's death scene . And I would cherish  those dilogues like ,

"  To be or not to be that is question  "

" Madness is great one's should not be passes unnoticed "

∆ If you director , what changes would you like to make in the remaking of the movie on Shakespeare's " Hamlet " ?

Kenneth Branagh's movie is well directed there are  much need to changes .   If I am director , In  the movie I would like to shown  Hamlet as a young prince , and also in the movie we find that the character of Ophelia is  to weak , and poppet of the Hamlet and his father , and no one who care and understand her in the Kenneth Branagh's movie .  I would like to present her role become stronger and powerful and also heroin of the movie .

∆ In the beginning of the movie , camera rolls over the statue of the king Hamlet out side the Elsinore Castel . The movie end with the similar sequence wherein the statue of King Hamlet is  hammered down to the dust  what sort of symbolism do you reading this ?

Through the symbolism creator tries to show the thing which we can not express the word .   The play open with name of Hamlet  on the wall of the castle of Elsinore and at the ends broken  of statue . And the fall down of statue  symbolized  end of everything  , and dynasty of the king  Hamlet . At the end after death nothing remains  ,  like pride , rule all the thing destroyed with the cycle of immortal  time on the  mortal things .

∆ While studying the play through the movie , which approach  do you find more applicable to be the play ? Why ? Give reason with illustration .

In the movie we find there are  many approaches applicable like ,
°
 The  phychological approach
 °The philosophical approach

The studying of the play I found the phychological approach  is applicable on the play .  In the play we find that Hamlet was the university scholar  and sharp minded   , and Hamlet is avenges his  father's murder as quickly as practicable  ,  Shakespeare makes  Claudius guilt as well as Hamlet's duty perfectly clear from the outset . And we can see that  he driven by phychological approach . When Claudius  alon while he was praying  at that time great opportunity to kill Claudius but he didn't . At that time he think that if he kill Claudius while prayers time then his soul would go into the heaven and that is Hamlet never want .
" Play is mainly concerned with the hero's unavailing fight against what can only be called a disorderd mind "

THANK YOU......

Metaphysical poetry

Metaphysical poet

The first half of the 17th century , a group of poets amerged  whoes poetry is known as " The metaphysical poetry " . The word  "meta " means  "After " . Thus metaphysics deal with the questions can't be explained by science . It questions the nature of reality in a philosophical way . Metaphysics can cover a broad range of topics from religious to consciousness .

∆ The definition of metaphysical poetry :

"Highly intellectualized poetry  marked by bold and ingenious conceits , incongruous imagery , complaxico and stability of thoughts , frequent use of paradox and often by deliberate harshness or rigidity of expression " .

Literary critic and poet Semuel Jonson first coined the term "metaphysical poetry " in his book  The lives of the Most Eminent English poet ( 1779-1781 ) . In the book  Jonson wrote about a group of 17th century British poets , Richard Crashaw , Andrew Marvell and Henry vaughan . He noted how  the  poets shared many common characterCharac , especially one of wit and elaborate style .

∆ Characteristics of metaphysical poetry  :-

 (1) Metaphysical conceits :
A significant feature of the metaphysical conceits . A concert is a comparison of two dissimilar things , which may have very little in common . E.g. Abraham Cowley in his poem "The Mistress " compares his love for ladies to his habit of traveling in various countries of the world .

(2) wit :-
Metaphysical Wit is also a networthy feature of the metaphysical poetry . Metaphysical wit is the expression of one's idea & thoughts , using aptly & technically , the words & various features of speech in such a manner as to provide pleasure to the readers . John Donne is called the "monarch of wit " in the history of metaphysical poetry .

(3) Literary Devices :-
Metaphysical poetry used metaphor , puns , paradoxes & meter to create drama & tension. In addition metaphysical poetry uses scientific , medical , legal words and phrases to create arguments about the philosophical aspects of life .

(4) conscious attempt :-
All the metaphysical poets made a conscious attempt to differ in the style of writing poetry from the former poets . They wanted to make their poetry different from the former poets . It was a conscious attempt to part with the existing style of writing poetry and to cultivate a new style .

#" The flea " by John Donne  :

    • Theme : Love , sex , marriage etc.

" The flea " is a remarkable example of  John Donne's metaphysical poetry . Donne has taken here help of biological image of flea to deal with the theme of love . It is though this image of the flea an insect that the lover in the present poem expresses his love for a woman and tries to convince her not to  refuse his love for her .
The poem is devided into three stanza in  which at the center is the image of flea . The first stanza of the poem is about the flea , is sucking his blood bnd than her blood . It convey that both would be happier , if she eccepts his proposal . At the end of the poem the lady has already made her nail purples by killing that flea . Now we tries to present his case by applying new logic . That logic is of false fear . The loss of the life of that flea has to teach a lesson to her . And the lesson is that most of our fear false .

∆" Elegy X : The Dream " :-

" The  dream " by John Donne can be considered as a poem of the  comparison between life in dream and life in reality . Through this poem the poet  wants to convey that life in reality can never be so much interesting and joyful as life in dream and fentacy .  The express this truth the poet takes help of a lover who is addressing to host beloved that her real presence is not so much pleasant as are the dream and fentacy of her .

∆ " THE RETREAT BY HENRY VAUGHAN  :

   • Themes :  (1) Childhood
                         (2) nature
                         (3) God
                         (4) religious etc.

The poem " The Retreat " is written by Henry vaughan . He was a Walsh metaphysical poet , author , translator and physician .

Vaughan 's "Retreat " is a religious lyrics , a spiritual optimism .  The Retreat based on the belief that exist as  soul in heaven before we are born on  Earth . In the poem Henry Vaughan is bemoaning his sons and wishing that the could go back to a pure state , one where his soul was free from sin .  In the poem , he talks about how before this life , his soul was pure and sinless .

In rhyming ' flower ' with 'hour ' Vaughan remains a us that everything has it's moment in the sun and then withers and dies , like a flower . Our childhood is but on hour ; our lives scareely longer yet the couplet that flowers , crowned with ' eternity ' as it is , there is something much faster in the world or rather , world . Before he had grown a bit older and started shining .  Vaughan tells us  , he felt the bright shoots of  " everlastingness " .

• A deep religious poem :-

Vaughan's first love in his poem The Retreat is God , when he was still a child and has hardly made any progress into worldly existence ,he could have glimpse of God's bright face and whenever he looked back. But as the burden of wordly existence grew upon him , he lost the glimpse of the Divine vision of Childhood .

Vaughan concludes "The Retreat " by saying that where as many people prefer to think in term of progress , looking forward to the future , he prefers to look back  to his earlier time when he was in touch with heaven and glimpsed the eternity of the afterlife .

    THANK YOU ......

View on the pom " Sairandhri" by Vinod Joshi

" Sairandhri " by Vinod Joshi

                 • Born : 13 August 1955 ,
                                 Bhoringda , Amreli ,
                                 Gujrat .
Vinod Joshi is a postmodern Gujrati poet , writer , and critic . And Vinod Josh's poetry is infused with image of rural life  , mainly through the portrayal of faminine sentiments in Gujrati literature .  He wrote so many notable works like ,
• And also he got so many awards like ,
          • Kavishwar Dalpatram Award (2013)
          • Sahitya Gaurav Puraskar (2015)
          • Narsinh Mahta Award (2018)
          • Kalapi Award (2018) etc.

Here I want to share my view on his poem " Sairandhri " based on character of Draupadi from Mahabharata .

∆  " Sairandhri " :-

This poem was growing in Australia . "Sairandhri " is published in 2018 .  A metrical poem composed in Prabandha from with seven cantos , 49 chapters and 1800 lines . It is based on  Draupadi , one of the characters of  Hindu Mahabharata and depicts a distinct world of Draupadi's thoughts and feeling as a woman during her exiles , using various meters like chopai and Dohra . Critic Radheshyam Sharma notes the poem for its musicality , figurative language and it's depiction of shringara ( the romantic sentiments ) . In this poem we find that Vinod Joshi used so many sanskrit words .

∆ Lost  Identity :-

" Sairandhri " is a poem of lost identity .  Acclaimed  for the elegant female sensibility in the sound , rhymes and rhythm of his songs . She find her identity , in such environment of non- indifferent nature and its intinity . Here Joshi seems to be heralding the sense of organic unity and pathos .In the poem we find that Sairandhri  loved  Karna , the son of  Surya (sun)  . And Surya wouldn't leave her in the end . The liminality between  " desire " and "  devotion " has moved into the resonating infinite skies with shifting horizons.

       Thank you....

By
R . K. MANDALIYA SIR

On 16th , 17th , 18th August 2019 , we have wonderful and knowledgeable  three days expert lecture on metaphysical poetry by R K Mandaliya sir from S P UNIVERSITY ,  Vallabh Vidhyanagar , Anand  at  English Department , M K Bhavnagar University . This wonderful  session was organizing by Dr. Dilip Barad sir.

 ∆ Day 1 :-

In the first session of the metaphysical poetry formal welcome and introduction of Mandaliya sir by Dr. Dilip Barad sir. And first  Mandaliya sir explained  to us many metaphysical poets like , Dr. Samuel Johnson ,  John Donne , Abraham Cowley , George Herbert etc. And than sir explained the mejor  metaphysical poet John Donne's writing style  and chief characteristics of his poems like ,

        * Conscious attempt
        * Far fatched images

And we also know that John Donne was pioneer of the group of the metaphysical poets.  First Mandaliya sir was gaving the meaning of the "what is metaphysical poetry" . And than he explained two great metaphysical poems of John Donne's like ,

" The Sun Rising "
• " Death Be Not Proud "

(1)  "The Sun Rising " :-

" The Rising Sun " is a well-known poem of John Donne. It is addressed to the sun by a lover . Who is in the company of his beloved. The poem open with the lover's rebuke to the rising sun . The love compares shine of the eyes of his beloved and the shine of the sun . He suggests that rising sun to take a trip off the whole world and to make survey whether spices of India are more beautiful or his beloved.  And we find the comparison between the political empire of a king and the empire of love.

(2) " Death Be Not Proud " :-

" Holy Sonnet X : Death Be Not Proud "  is a very popular holy Sonnet of John Donne. The present sonnet addressed by the poet to death itself . In this poem the poet try to nullify  fear of death .  And the death offers sleep and rest to mankind. And in this poem we also find  Donne's beliefs in the theory of rebirth .

∆ Day 2 :-

On the second day Mandaliya sir had taken three poems . And through his lecture he gave so many examples like, Dushyant and shakuntala , jagte raho , Amar prem etc.

(3)  " The  flea " :-

Donne's has taken here help of a biological image of flea to deal with the many themes like love , sex , marriage etc.
The poem devided into three stanza. It is through this image of the flea - an insect that the lover in the present poem expresses his love for a woman and tries to convince her not to refuse his love for her.

(4) " Elegy X : The Dream " :-

" The  Dream " by John Donne can be considered as a poem of comparison between life in dream and life in reality . Through this poem poet wants to convey that life in reality can never be  so much  interesting  and joyful as life in dream and reality .

(5) " Song : Sweetest Love , I Do Not Go " :-

"Sweetest love , I do not go " by Donne is a poem  about death in live . Here poet wants to convey that those who love never die , physical death is no death at all . In love there can be only one type of death in love and that is saperation . The poem is addressed by a lover to his beloved in which his attempt is to convince his beloved not to be sad because of his fast approaching physical death.

∆ DAY 3 :-
And  the last session of the metaphysical potry  Mandaliya sir taught us one poem "The Ecstacy " by John Donne.

(6) " The Ecstacy " :-
The poem about abstract experience of onness in sublime love . The poet  here wants to explain significance of both body and soul in love . Here the journey is from body to soul and  back to body . The reading of this poem makes it clear that Donne must gone through the " Geeta " .  Because there is over - tone of Geeta in the present poem.

through this three days session we  learnt so many new things . And I like Mandaliya sir's unique style of teaching , presence of mind , using humour , and also he explained difficult things to easy way .

And I would like to say thanks  to Mandaliya sir and also Dr. Dillip Barad sir for organizing this session.

 THANK YOU .

Thinking activity :- Dr. Faustus by Christopher Marlowe

Question : 1

The play directed by Matthew Dunster for Globe theatre ends with this scene  (see the image of  Lucifer ) what does it signify ?

( Lucifer : prince of Hell )

The play " the Tragical History of Doctor Faustus " is written by  Christopher Marlowe . And the play directed by Matthew Dunster for Globe theatre . This is Lucifer's picture.  Marlow's major dramas are stories about heroes who seek power : Dr. Faustus is no different.
            Lucifer presented by Mephistopheles
in answering Faustus' question and also represent idea of his absolute power. And
master of Mephistopheles . In this image we find that Lucifer is the cunning and cruel manifestation of eternal damnation. The fallen angel and  "prince of Hell " . Who hold the contract for Faustus's soul. He holds dominion overall devils . In the drama many dilogues shows power of Lucifer like ,

" Christ cannot save the soul , for he is just. There's none but I have interest in the same ".

Lucifer's kingdom now is hell and work against God , corrupting humans , learning them into sin and capturing their immortal soul to populate his realm for eternity. And Lucifer is aclever and merciless manipulator who wield fear as a tool to get what he wants . And Lucifer celebrating his win to spreading his wings.

Question : 2

If God is present in the play. If yes  , where and how ? If no , why ?

Christopher Marlowe's drama  " the Tragical History of the Doctor Faustus " is a story of damnation . In this story we find absence of God . It is a story of one man's desire to attain the power and knowledge he associates with Godhood and thereby become like God himself. Dr. Faustus , Marlow's tragic hero , embraces his own tragic flow and willingly selles his soul to Lucifer through the demonic minion Mephistopheles . Throughout the intervening year Faustus the man , the magician and the damned soul attain power success and fame . Dr. Faustus does not think God and Marlowe conspicuously leaves God's presence out of the play.

And in this drama we see that God is mentioned once time and Lucifer is mentioned three time. The power of these line compares to the entirety of the play  were Good is rarely even mentioned and is never a presence. Where demonsand their dark magic is ever present. And at the end Faustus begins to appeal to Christ for Marcy,
" O Christ , my saviour, my saviour Help to save distressed Faustus soul ! "
And at the end we find that the prince of hell Lucifer was win. And swelling pride will lead to his downfall.

Question : 3

What reading and interpretation can be to this image  ( see the image of of Daedalus and Icarus ) with reference to Central theme of the play Dr. Faustus ?

The myth of Daedalus and Icarus is one of the most known and fascinating Greek mythology , as it consist of both historical and mythical details.
Daedalus was the skillful craftman and artist. And he was seen n as a symbol of wisdom , knowledge and power . He was father of Icarus. He and his son Icarus devised a plan to escape by using wing made of wax that Daedalus invented . They escaped , but sadly Icarus did not head his father's warning and flaw too close to the sun . In wax melted and Icarus fell to his death .
In the Greek myth and Dr. Faustus drama we find many similar themes like ,
               • pride
               •Quest for knowledge
The Greek myth and Dr. Faustus both tell us that his pride will lead to his downfall. And more importantly it compares Dr. Faustus ' desire to Icarus' doomed attempt fly. The Icarus myth act as guide to let us have better understanding of Dr. Faustus. The Icarian tregedy of Faustus is consequences of his characters : proud , blind and greedy. The force of his own nature compels him to the study of magic and his unable to resist. In this sense Faustus's character determines his destiny, like Icarus , he fall down from the heavens and is doomed to death.

 Question : 4

How do you interpret this painting ?

This is the painting of landscape. Normally we can find that the beauty of nature , everyone is busy daily routine , tthe shepherd was looking the sky and sheeps graze grass , farmer is busy his work and someone has fallen in the water but nobody look that side.  But the critical way we find that the term centre v/s periphery and Greek mythology, Icarus succeded in flying with wings made by his father Daedalus using feathers secured with wax. Ignoring his father's warning Icarus chose to fly to close to the sun melting the wax and fell into the sea and drowned. And another we find the symbol of " ignorence " .

Question :5
