Thinking activity of The White Tiger

 Hello readers !

Once again warmly welcome to my blog. This blog is part of my thinking activity task which is assigned by our professor Dr. Dilip barad sir. CLICK HERE to view more about this task.......

The White Tiger is the debut novel of Aravind Adiga, which brought him Man Booker Prize in 2008.

πŸ’ How far do you agree with the India represented in the novel The White Tiger?

In the novel, Adiga has portrayed both side of India like, India of darkness and India of light.  The novel provides darkly humorous perspective of India's class struggle in globalised world as told through a restrospective narration frome Balram Halwai. Although Indian economy has grown steadily over the last two decades, its growth has been uneven when comparing different social groups, economic groups, geographic regions, rural and urban areas. The representation of India is quite similar to what real India is. But yes we can't deny the development of India too. But there are places where still situations is something horrible. Even people are unable to get daily food, basic education, some social problems like dowry, rituals which ruins life of an individuals. Correspondingly corruption prevails everywhere in India, disgraceful situation of a police system and much more.

πŸ’ Do you believe that Balram's story is the archetype of all stories of 'rags to riches' ?

Yes, it seems that this book stands in the category of self help book. In real life we find so many entrepreneurs who has lived some horrible life then they reached at this height. While we look this archetype, Balram's story also get fits in the category of rags to riches. As from his mediocre childhood he reaches to richness.

Testing and Evolution

 Hello friends!

Once again warmly welcome to my blog. This blog is my thinking activity task which is assigned by our professor Dr. Dilip barad. In this blog we have to discuss about the Testing and Evolution.  CLICK HERE to view more about this task.....

πŸ’ Validity :

Validity is arguably the most criteria for  the quility of a test. The term validity refers to whether or not the test measures what it claims to measure. On a test with high validity the items will be closely linked to the test's intended focus. For many certification  and licensure tests this means that the items will be highly related to a specific job or occupation.

πŸ’  Reliability :

Reliability is one of the most important elements of test quality. It has to do with the consistency, or reproducibility, or an examinee's performance on the test. For example, if you were to administer a test with high reliability to an examinee on two occasions, you would be very likely to reach the same conclusions about the examinee's performance both times. A test with poor reliability, on the other hand, might result in very different scores for the examinee across the two test administrations.

πŸ’  Fairness :

The fairness of an exam refers to its freedom from any kind of bias. The exam should be appropriate for all qualified examinees irrespective of race, religion, gender, or age. The test should not disadvantage any examinee, or group of examinees, on any basis other than the examinee's lack of the knowledge and skills the test is intended to measure. Item writers should address the goal of fairness as they undertake the task of writing items.

πŸ’ Difference between assessment and evaluation :

Assessment is the process of objectively understanding the state or condition of a thing, by observation and measurement. Assessment of teaching means taking a measure of its effectiveness. “Formative” assessment is measurement for the purpose of improving it. “Summative” assessment is what we normally call “evaluation.”

Evaluation is the process of observing and measuring a thing for the purpose of judging it and of determining its “value,” either by comparison to similar things, or to a standard. Evaluation of teaching means passing judgment on it as part of an administrative process.

Ideally, a fair and comprehensive plan to evaluate teaching would incorporate many data points drawn from a broad array of teaching dimensions. Such a plan would include not only student surveys, but also self-assessments, documentation of instructional planning and design, evidence of scholarly activity to improve teaching, and most importantly, evidence of student learning outcomes.

Thinking Activity : Teaching English Language through Literature

 Hello readers !

Welcome to my blog. We all know that Literature is generally used in English Language Teaching (ELT) for the development of knowledge about the language. It helps the learners to get familiar with the socio-political backgrounds of target language society and also makes them understand how communication takes place in a particular community.  So, this blog is my thinking activity task which is assigned by our professor Dr. Dilip Barad. In this task we have to discuss about this perticular points like,

  1. What sort of activities or tasks can be designed to teach language using a 'Novel' or 'short story'.
  2. What sort of activities or tasks can be designed to teach language using  a 'poem'.
  3. What sort of activities or tasks can be designed to teach language using a 'Play'.
  4. What sort of activities or tasks can be designed to teach language using  a 'Film or videos'.

πŸ’ What sort of activities or tasks can be designed to teach language using a 'poem'.

Students read the poem and underline any words connected with the lexical grouping or cluster they discussed before reading the poem. Are there any other words in the poem which seem connected with this grouping? What metaphorical or symbolic meaning do these words seem to rake on in the poem? (In some poems, you may find a few different clusters or groupings which often function contrastively.)

b) Divide students into two groups. One group will be given the first verse of the poem from which most figurative uses of language are removed, the other the same verse from which most literal ones have been taken out.3

c) In some poems a grouping or cluster of words are linked together associatively and come to take on a metaphorical or figurative meaning in the poem. Before they read the poem ask students to write down any associations they have for this grouping. Does this cluster take on any particular symbolic meaning in the poem?

d) Students from the one group then discuss with students from the other how they completed the cloze exercise. What do they think of the original version of the poem? What two things are being compared? What is the effect of this comparison?

Using poetry with lower levels :

In the previous sections, we have thought mainly about some of the more distinctive features of poetry, and the problems they could present for our learners. In the rest of this chapter we turn our attention to some of the practical tasks and activities we can use to exploit poems in the classroom. In this section we look at some ways in which poetry can be used with students at elementary and low-intermediate level.

One Night @The Call Center

 Hello readers!

Welcome to my blog. This blog is a part of thinking activity task which is given by my Prof. Dilip Barad. Here is the link of his blog click here.......

One Night @ the Call Center is a novel written by Chetan Bhagat and first published in 2005. The novel revolves around a group of six call center employees working at the Connexions call center in Gurgaon, Haryana, India. It takes place during one night, during which all of the leading characters confront some aspect of themselves or their lives they would like to change. The story uses a literal deus ex machina, when the characters receive a phone call from God.

πŸ’  Narrative structure of the novel and its comparison with Life of Pi.

There is unreliable narrative structure in the novel because from the very beginning the story is narrated by a strange woman to Chetan Bhagat in the train. Then she forced him to write it as his second book without mentioning her name. Chetan Bhagat then write story and used one character Shyam for narration. In this way it becomes unreliable.

There is similarity of narrative structure between Life of Pi and One Night @call centre. In the life of Pi, the protagonist told the story to the writer, just like the woman in the train telling story to Chetan Bhagat. There are two stories being told and it was upon the writer that which they select to write, the one is with God or the one without God. In both the cases the writer chose to write story with God.

πŸ’ Contemporary issues in on@tcc:

From the beginning we are discussing the nature and function of literature. What is literature and what does literature do?Literature is not just imaginative stories written in leisure time only for entertainment. But it is reflection of time, place and society in which we are living. Literature is mirror or photographic image of society. Equally literature is also an X ray image portraying ugly, darker sides of society.

Similarly this novel also throws light on the contemporary issues of present society. All six major characters have their own problems in their personal life. Actually, they are not just imaginative characters, but they are mouthpiece or representative of majority of Indians.

Apart from this other issues are also beautifully touched upon like... Love/ arranged marriage, breakup & patch up, Bossism, exploitation in modeling or other sectors, OLD MORALITY- NEW MORALITY, family values, constant fight of parents and its effect on children, low self esteem, emotional blackmailing, hire & fire work culture, anti- American sentiments and many more......
